We have talked a ton about the issues with most conventional face washes and why you should steer clear of them. From SLS to parabens and other chemicals, they can do much more harm than good to your skin.
In this post, we are going to focus a bit more on fragrance. Fragrance is found in most conventional face wash and may even be included on organic and natural face cleaners as well. This ingredient causes a massive cause for concern, and it is one of our top ingredients to avoid in beauty and skincare products.

So why is fragrance so bad? There are many reasons why this ingredient is so toxic. One of the biggest issues is the fact companies tend to hide heaps of chemicals and toxins in the “fragrance” ingredient. According to the FDA, companies do not have to legally disclose what makes up their fragrance, which allows them to hide a lot of nasty things in there. According to some studies, upwards of 3,000 chemicals are found and used in any combination on products that contain fragrance. Of course, not all 3,000 ingredients are used at the same time, but 20, 100, or more ingredients may be found in there, but you would never know! It is also important to note that you may see fragrance listed as “parfum” in the ingredient list as well.
One specific study done by the Environmental Working Group and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics in 2010 focused on testing some of the most popular fragrances on the market.
They individually tested each fragrance to see what they were comprised of and they had some shocking results. “They found endocrine disruptors, phthalates, diethyl phthalate, which can damage men’s ‘sperm count, more than 24 chemicals that are known to cause headaches, rashes, dizziness, terrible coughing, skin irritation, hyperpigmentation, and more. Most of the chemicals they found have also been linked to birth defects, cancer, and chronic and deadly diseases” as we discussed in this article.
Now that we know fragrance is so bad for our bodies and our health, we must find a face cleanser that is free of artificial and chemical-based perfumes! Luckily, Nourish Organics Moisturizing Face Cleaner is only filled with the good stuff and has absolutely no added fragrance of any kind.
This face cleanser by Nourish Organics, first and foremost, is fragrance-free. It does not have any added essential oils for fragrance either. This means the wash is never going to dry out or irritate your skin since some essential oils are strong and can cause irritation and redness for some people with particularly sensitive skin. The wash also penetrates deep into your skin, so it can clean out your pores. Makeup, dirt, oil, debris, and environmental pollutants build up in the pores and to keep your skin glowing and healthy you must remove that build up every single day. It will wash away all of the impurities but without any of the harshnesses.
A lot of washes may clean your skin, but they leave your face feeling tight, dry, irritation, and redness and pain may result as well. This type of irritation occurs when alcohols and other harsh chemicals are used. Instead of using harmful and harsh ingredients, Nourish Organic uses simple, gentle, and natural ingredients that have the same wonderful effect.
Cucumber hydrates and soothes your skin, watercress washed away impurities with its high antioxidant level, and it also helps protect your skin against free-radical damage.
We also love the fact this product is USDA Certified Organic, which is often challenging to find in a face wash. It only uses simple and recognizable ingredients as well. We find the following ingredients:
- Aloe Vera Juice
- Organic Coconut Oil
- Purified Water
- Potassium Hydroxide
- Organic Sunflower Seed Oil
- Organic Sesame Seed Oil
- Organic Neem Leaf Oil
- Organic Guar Gum
- Organic Cucumber Extract
- Organic Watercress Extract
We should note that potassium hydroxide does come with some concerns, but it is important to remember we sometimes have to compromise in some areas. According to EWG Skin Deep Database, this ingredient may cause some skin irritation on some people and some organ system toxicity if used in very high dosages. They suggest you use some restrictions, however, compared to many other ingredients; this harm level is still quite low.
